ManWinWin implemented on the Azores Ocean scientific research vessel to centralize maintenance

ManWinWin has been implemented on the Azores Ocean, the new scientific research vessel of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, to centralize the maintenance management of more than 650 onboard assets.
The project involved ManWinWin Software, the Regional Government of the Azores and the Portuguese Navy, with implementation carried out during the vessel’s construction at Astilleros Armon in Vigo, Spain.

ManWinWin has been implemented on the Azores Ocean, the new scientific research vessel of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, providing a centralized platform for managing the maintenance of more than 650 onboard assets.

The project brought together ManWinWin Software, the Regional Government of the Azores and the Portuguese Navy, which is responsible for the vessel’s operation and maintenance. The implementation took place at the Astilleros Armon shipyard in Vigo, Spain, during the vessel’s construction and equipment phase.

The Azores Ocean is a multidisciplinary scientific research vessel designed to strengthen Portugal’s and the Azores’ capacity for marine research, particularly in the Northeast Atlantic and the extensive Exclusive Economic Zone surrounding the archipelago.

A structured implementation in three phases

The ManWinWin implementation followed a structured three-phase approach designed to prepare the maintenance management system before the vessel entered operation.

1. Asset survey and technical data collection

The first phase focused on identifying and registering the maintenance assets installed on board.

The ManWinWin team supported the collection of technical information for each asset, including equipment specifications, photographs and associated technical documentation.

This process created the foundation for a centralized and structured asset database covering the vessel’s critical equipment.

2. Maintenance database and plans preparation

The second phase involved preparing the maintenance management database.

Technical manuals and documentation for the vessel’s main systems were analyzed, including generator sets, propulsion equipment and the ballast water treatment system.

Based on this information, maintenance plans were created and configured in ManWinWin, helping ensure that preventive maintenance activities and technical procedures were ready to support operations from the start.

3. Training the future users

The final phase focused on preparing the vessel’s future users to work with the system.

Six training sessions were delivered, covering key maintenance management processes, including:

  • Managing work orders
  • Controlling warehouse and spare parts inventory
  • Registering new equipment
  • Creating and managing maintenance plans
  • Recording maintenance activities
  • Monitoring maintenance performance indicators

The training was designed to ensure that the crew could use ManWinWin as part of their daily maintenance operations.

More than 650 assets and 182 technical documents centralized

During the technical survey, approximately 650 onboard assets were registered in ManWinWin.

The implementation also included the organization and registration of 182 technical documents, making manuals and other relevant information available through a centralized platform.

By connecting equipment records, technical documentation and maintenance plans, the system provides a structured foundation for managing maintenance activities throughout the vessel’s operational lifecycle.

Centralized information for greater operational control

One of the main objectives of the project was to provide a single platform where critical information about the vessel’s equipment could be accessed and managed.

In addition to centralizing technical specifications, documentation and maintenance history, ManWinWin’s mobile capabilities will help simplify the recording of maintenance interventions, working hours and activities performed by the maintenance team.

This allows maintenance information to be recorded closer to the point of execution, improving the availability and traceability of operational data.

Supporting the maintenance of a strategic scientific asset

The Azores Ocean represents an important investment in scientific research and marine knowledge.

According to the Regional Government of the Azores, the vessel was developed to provide the Region with an advanced technological platform for access to the deep sea of the central Northeast Atlantic, particularly within the Azores’ Exclusive Economic Zone.

The vessel will support activities such as seabed mapping, marine research, biotechnology, offshore renewable energy development and scientific training. Its operation and maintenance are supported through cooperation between the Regional Government of the Azores and the Portuguese Navy.

With more than 650 assets now registered and structured in ManWinWin, the Azores Ocean has a modern maintenance management platform capable of supporting greater organization, traceability and access to information critical to its operations.
